Gator Track Teams Compete at Slippery Rock

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Although there were no team scores kept, the Allegheny College track and field teams posted several solid performances at the Slippery Rock University Invitational Saturday.
The top performer on the women’s side was freshman Emily Pfeufer (St. Mary’s, Pa./ Elk County Catholic) (right), who advanced to the finals and went on to place second in the triple jump (36-6) and seventh in the long jump (16-3.5).
The field events saw many of Allegheny’s top place winners Saturday, including freshman Liz Earley (Venetia, Pa./ Peters Township) placing fifth in both the shot put (38-5) and the hammer throw (133-6). Also in the throws, freshman Katie Pankowski (Pittsburgh, Pa./ Woodland Hills) finished third overall with a best effort of 127-5.
Grabbing fourth place honors was junior Alexis Mioducki (Grand Island, N.Y.) in the high jump (5-2) and freshman Sarah Sammel (Bethel Park, Pa.) in the pole vault (10-0).
On the track, senior Christina Hasson (Franklin, Pa.) took third place in the 3,000 steeplechase with a time of 12:53.80, while sophomore Rashelle Glass (New Castle, Pa./ Shenango) claimed sixth in the 800 in a time of 2:23.45.
The Gators also had a strong contingent in the 100 hurdles, as four AC runners finished seventh (freshman Liz Straus - Kirtland, Ohio), eighth (Mioducki), ninth (freshman Caitlin Nay - Uniontown, Ohio/Green) and 10th (freshman Jessica Gratton – Bridgeville, Pa./ Chartiers Valley).
The Gator men also recorded strong performances on the track, which included juniors Sean Flynn (Kensington, Conn./ Xavier) (below) and Mark Delaney (Pittsburgh, Pa./ Mt. Lebanon) taking second (1:58.02) and third (1:58.19) respectively. Senior Matt Popowicz (North East, Pa.) and senior Dave Washousky (Clarence, N.Y./ Clarence Central) rounded out the top eight by crossing seventh and eighth respectively.
Other distance runners to grab top placements were freshman Dan Burgio (East Aurora, N.Y.) finishing fourth in the 1,500 (4:08.65) and freshman Kurtis Falcone (Mannsville, N.Y./ South Jefefrson Central) placing fourth in the 3,000 steeplechase (10:55.63).
Rounding out the top performers on the track were sophomore Josh Rhue (Brimley, Mich./ Clonlara) taking sixth in the 100 (11.23) and junior Dave Griffin (Pittsburgh, Pa./ Montour) earned sixth place with a time of 15.94 seconds in the 110 hurdles.
Two Gators finished high in their respective jumping events, as freshman Justin Schwab (Kill Buck, N.Y./ Salamanca) finished second in the high jump (6-4) and freshman Conrad Rapp (Medway, Mass./ Worcester Academy) tied for third place in the pole vault (14-6).
The throwing events were highlighted by a sixth place showing by junior Vince Werner (Sheffield, Pa.) in the javelin (198-11), which while it is a provisonal qualifying distance for NCAAs, it is currently the second-best throw in Division II in the nation this season. Also taking a fifth place finish was sophomore Pat Confer (Bradford, Pa./ Bradford Area) in the shot put (46-6).
Both Gator teams will continue their preparation for the 2005 NCAC Championship, which will be April 29-30 at Ohio Wesleyan University, next week when they compete at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania Invitational.
