Gators Finish Second Day at Invitational

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Allegheny College track and field teams finished its second day at the University of California-San Diego Invitational Saturday, with the men’s team taking 10th place out of 18 teams and the women’s team finishing 11th of 16 teams.
The women’s team scored 23.5 points to finish a half point ahead of Buena Vista University and also in front of Division I San Diego State University. The lone track event that saw the Gators score on Saturday was the 4x100 relay. The team of junior Amanda Grilli (Washington, Pa./ Trinity), sophomore Heather Knupp (Canonsburg, Pa./ Canon-McMillan), freshman Emily Pfeufer (St. Mary’s, Pa./ Elk County Catholic) and freshman Liz Straus (Kirtland, Ohio) placed eighth overall with a time of 53.28.
Along with her effort in the relay, Pfeufer scored in two other events. She placed fifth in the long jump with a best effort of 16 feet, 4.25 inches and then tied for seventh in the triple jump (34-7.75).
A pair of AC competitors scored in the throws, with freshman Liz Earley (Venetia, Pa./ Peters Township) placing sixth in the shot put (38-0.75) and sophomore Katie Pankowski (Pittsburgh, Pa./ Woodland Hills) registering a throw of 110-11 in the javelin to place fifth overall.
On the men’s side, the day was highlighted by a trio of Gators scoring in the 5,000-meter run. Senior Jeff Conroy (Pittsburgh, Pa./ Baldwin) placed second overall with a time of 14:57.31, while senior Kevin Pool (New Windsor, Md./ Westminster) took third (15:02.35) and freshman Ryan Place (Meshoppen, Pa./ Elk Lake) crossed in eighth place (15:29.84).
In the field events, sophomore Pat Confer (Bradford, Pa./ Bradford Area) scored in two events by placing fifth in the shot put (46-9.50) and seventh in the discus (137-9). Fellow sophomore Vince Werner (Sheffield, Pa.) grabbed third place in the javelin with a throw of 181-10.
The Gator track teams will be back in action on Saturday, April 2 at the Western Pennsylvania Championships, which will be held at Carnegie Mellon University.
