BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – Allegheny College senior Leah Shouey (Franklin, Pa.) became just the second runner in AC indoor track history to earn two All-American honors in the same year on Saturday at the 2005 NCAA Indoor Championships, which were held at Illinois Wesleyan University.

Shouey earned All-American accolades in the mile and the 5,000-meter run on Saturday. The day started with the mile final, which saw Shouey bring the seventh-best time from Friday’s preliminary into the race. The Gator senior would improve on her time and finish in the championship race, as she placed fourth overall with a time of 4:55.53, just .13 seconds off her school-record time. Shouey was just edged out for third place, as DeSales University senior Gina Lucrezi finished three hundredths of a second ahead of Shouey.

Missy Buttry of Wartburg (Iowa) College easily won the event by crossing in a time of 4:43.92, which was more than 10 seconds ahead of the second place runner and set a new meet and facility record.

In the next to last event of the meet for the women, Shouey took seventh place in the 5K by finishing in a time of 17:29.49. In addition to earning her second All-American award, Shouey also gained a measure of retribution over Lucrezi by finishing two spots ahead of her in the 5K, as the DeSales runner placed ninth overall. Of the three runners (Shouey, Lucrezi and Amanda Kuca of Concordia) who competed in both the mile and the 5,000, Shouey was the only competitor to come away with the double All-American honor.

The overall winner of the 5K was Carter Hamill of Amherst College, who took first place with a time of 17:02.40.

Shouey’s double All-American accolade is the first time in 16 years that a Gator runner has achieved that distinction. In 1988, Christina Dudek took third place in the 1,500 and fifth place in the 3,000. Shouey is also just the third Allegheny competitor to earn two All-American indoor honors overall, as Kari Bonomo was second in the high jump in 1995 and fifth in 1996.

Her performance this weekend continues a remarkable senior season for Shouey. She has helped the Gators win the NCAA MidEast Regional team title in cross country and the NCAC Indoor Track team title. As an individual, she earned All-Region honors for the fourth time in her career on the trails last fall. On the track, she won the 1,500 title at NCAC indoor championships and also set two new school records during this season.

Today also gives her three All-American honors in her career, to go along with the fourth place finish she recorded at the 2004 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
