Feb 15, 2005

Boxscore

Meadville, Pa. - Senior guard Raelynn Miles (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) led three Gators (18-6, 10-5 NCAC) in double figures with 14 points, as the Allegheny College Women’s basketball team (18-6, 10-5 NCAC) defeated the Hiram (OH) College Terriers 78-52.

Hiram (8-16, 2-13 NCAC) held a 4-3 lead at the 17:37 mark in the first half on a lay-up by Cassie Bedard, as she hit the Terriers first two shots to give them their only lead of the contest. However, the Gators slowly started to score and quickly built a 19-9 lead on a lay-up by sophomore guard Megan Vasilisin (Munhall, Pa./Oakland Catholic) at the 14:03 mark.

For the rest of the half, Allegheny stormed past the Terriers on a 33-18 run, which would put them ahead 52-27 at the end of the first period. On 22 Gator field goals, a remarkable 15 assists were dished out, while Allegheny also controlled the glass with 26 total rebounds, 12 on the offensive side. A number of these boards turned into second-chance points or a trip to the free-throw line.

Fifteen Gators played and nine scored points in the first half. Miles led the way with 12, while junior forward Courtney Steding (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) added 11.

At the beginning of the second period, the Gators offense stalled, scoring only four points in the first five minutes of the half. Poor shooting (2-10 from the field) was the key in the early going, as Allegheny let Hiram creep back to within 17 with 11:26 to play in the half.

A low-scoring second period saw the Gators shoot only 33% from the field, while committing 11 turnovers. After dropping 52 points in the first half, shooting 54% from the field, Allegheny could only manage half of that in the second frame, notching 26 points.

However, the Terriers could not establish any kind of comeback, as they shot an even poorer 23% from the field, scoring just 25 points in the second period.

Although it was a low scoring affair, Allegheny closed out the game on a 17-8 run in the last 10 minutes of the second half.

Miles played her best all-around game of the season as she notched a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Also, she passed out a team-high six assists and improved on her team lead in steals with three.

Steding and Vasilisin each finished with 13 points, while Steding continued her overall solid play with seven boards, five assists, and four steals.

For the Terriers, guard Allison Davis led the team in scoring with 13, while forward Tania Carman notched eight points and 13 rebounds.

Allegheny finishes up its regular season schedule on Saturday at 2:00 PM, as they travel to Denison (OH) University for a match-up with the second place Big Red.
