McDonough Tallies 1,000th Career Point, but Gators Fall to Kenyon 68-58

Meadville, Pa. - Senior forward Meredith McDonough (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) eclipsed the 1,000-point barrier and scored 12 points overall, however, it was not enough to push past the Kenyon (OH) College Ladies (18-4, 12-2 NCAC), as the Gators (17-6, 9-5 NCAC) dropped the contest 68-58.
The loss snaps a nine-game winning streak for the Gators, although they won 14 of their last 16 contests.
At the outset of the game, it looked as if the highly motivated Gators were overwhelming Kenyon with their pressure defense. A steal, followed by a lay-up from senior guard Raelynn Miles (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) at the 11:06 mark in the first half, gave Allegheny a comfortable 17-8 lead. In the first 10 minutes of the period, the Ladies committed 11 turnovers, most of which the Gators turned into points on the offensive end.
Kenyon seemed to solve Allegheny’s full-court press as the half wore on and because of it, the Ladies converted on a number of easy lay-ups. At the same time, the Gators offense went cold as they were held scoreless for the last six minutes of the period, committing four turnovers and missing on all seven of their field goal attempts.
At the half, Kenyon went into the locker room with a 30-24 lead, using a 14-0 run in the last six minutes to give them momentum going into the second period.
The Ladies picked up where they left off in the first half on the offensive end, quickly mounting a double-digit lead of 37-27 with 17:47 to play in the game. Hitting on 52% of their field goals in the second half, Kenyon’s offense was fueled by Anne Dugan, as she recorded seven points in the first nine minutes of the period. Her lay-up at the 10:26 mark put the Ladies up 51-37.
Allegheny made a valiant effort to get back in the game, going on an 11-3 run and cutting Kenyon’s lead to six at 54-48 with six minutes to play. However, that was as close as the Gators would get, as they could not connect on a slew of three-pointers at the end of half, while the Ladies converted 5-5 free throws down the stretch to seal the game.
Improved passing in the second period by the Ladies led to 18 assists in the game, while the Gators could only manage five.
Junior guard Valery Medwid (Coroapolis, Pa./Montour) led the Gators in scoring with 13 points, knocking down 3-5 three-pointers and also grabbing three rebounds.
Along with McDonough’s 12 points and four boards, fellow senior forward Jackie Tubo (Altoona, Pa.) got her first start of the year on Senior Day and responded with five points and led the Gators in rebounding with six.
Up next for Allegheny is their last home contest of the year, as they take on the Hiram (OH) College Terriers at 7:30 at the David V. Wise Center.
