Fredonia, N.Y. - The women’s basketball team continued to win and did so again on the road Tuesday night at SUNY-Fredonia. The Gators (17-5) used eight three-pointers to drive to a 61-52 victory over the Blue Devils (11-9).
It took three minutes before a point was scored, and the Gators jumped to 10-3 lead on two jumpers by senior guard Raelynn Miles (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) before the Blue Devils answered with an 11-2 run to take a 14-12 lead at the 11:03 mark.
Nearly two minutes later, junior guard Valery Medwid (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) hit the first of eight three-pointers by Allegheny and gave her team a lead they didn’t let go of the rest of the game.
The Gators built their lead to as many as 13 points in the first half when sophomore guard Katie Kestler (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) hit her first of four treys on the night.
AC also used 17 points off 16 Blue Devil turnovers in the first period to distance themselves from the hosts.
Despite being out rebounded 23-15 in the second half, Allegheny managed to remain in control and hold a double-digit lead until the last second.
Shots from behind the arc were the difference, as Allegheny hit eight treys and Fredonia missed all seven of their attempts.
Kestler led the Gators with 12 points, while Medwid and junior forward Courtney Steding (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) both totaled 11 markers. Sophomore guard Meghan Vasilisin (Munhall, Pa./Oakland Catholic) grabbed seven boards to lead Allegheny. Senior forward Meredith McDonough (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) scored six points and now needs five points to total 1,000 for her career.
Amanda Neamon led all scorers with 14 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead Fredonia.
The Gators return home to face Kenyon (Ohio) College on Saturday, February 12 at 2:00 p.m. in the Wise Center. Kenyon is currently first in the NCAC with an 11-1 record and defeated Allegheny 61-48 in December.
