Gator Win Streak at Eight Following 72-54 Win

February 5, 2005

Box Score

RICHMOND, Ind. – Led by a stingy defense that held host Earlham (Ind.) College to 29 percent shooting in the game, the Allegheny College women’s basketball team won its eighth consecutive game Saturday by a 72-54 count to improve to 16-5 overall and 9-4 in the NCAC. The Quakers fall to 3-17 and 0-12 in the league.

A Lisa Vanderkolk lay-up gave Earlham a 2-0 lead 37 seconds into the game. But it would be the final Quaker advantage of the day, as the Gators controlled the rest of the half. Allegheny led by three points at the midway point of the period when an 8-0 spurt pushed the lead to 21-10. Junior forward Courtney Steding (McDonald, Pa./ Fort Cherry) had back-to-back lay-ups to spark the run that helped send the Gators to the locker room with a 36-19 lead.

Both Steding (right) and senior guard Raelynn Miles (McDonald, Pa./ Fort Cherry) went 5-5 in the first half to pace AC, who shot 52 percent (14-27) in the opening half. Miles was also 3-3 from the arc on her way to 13 first half markers.

Earlham cut the AC lead to 40-29 five minutes into the second half but the Gators responded with a 10-2 run, which was highlighted by triples from sophomore guards Katie Kestler (Pittsburgh, Pa./ Mt. Lebanon) and Meghan Vasilisin (Munhall, Pa./ Oakland Catholic), and Allegheny wasn’t threatened again.

The second half also saw the Gator bench flex their muscle in putting the game away. Freshman guard Stephanie Izurieta (Mason, Ohio/ William Mason) buried a pair of treys and scored eight, while sophomore forward Jennifer Latronica (Gibsonia, Pa./ Deer Lakes) put six points on the board on 3-3 shooting, which helped AC hit 56 percent (15-27) from the floor in the second half.

Miles (left) was the winners’ top scorer, recording 17 points and adding four steals in the win. Steding had 12 points and also contributed five assists and four rebounds.

Senior forward Meredith McDonough (Pittsburgh, Pa./ Oakland Catholic) scored four points in the game to give her 989 for her career. She will try to become the 11th women’s player in Allegheny history to reach 1,000 points in her career Tuesday night at SUNY-Fredonia (N.Y.), in a game scheduled to tip-off at 7 p.m.

Earlham was led by Guin Summerton with 17 points and Chelsea Caywood with 13 points.
