Boxscore

Meadville, Pa. - Fourteen Gators etched their name in the scoring column and seven season highs were set on Tuesday night as Allegheny (14-5, 7-4 NCAC) defeated the visiting Oberlin (OH) College Yeomen (6-13, 2-9 NCAC) by a score of 99-74.

With a win, the Gators have run their streak to seven straight victories and have triumphed in 10 of their last 11 games.

Both teams came out shooting extremely well from the field in the first half and it seemed that a high scoring affair was in the works. For the first seven or eight minutes of contest, the teams traded buckets and the score was close as the Gators led 23-17 at the 12:42 mark.

However, an onslaught of scoring from the Gators put the understaffed Yeowomen in a hole, as Allegheny went on a 34-18 run to end the half and give them a 57-35 lead heading into the locker room. The star of the first period for Allegheny was junior guard Valery Medwid (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour), as she connected on 4-4 three pointers for 12 points. Senior forward Meredith McDonough (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) also chipped in with 10 points and three rebounds.

Medwid picked up where she left off in the first half by hitting a jumper at the 19:15 mark in the second half for the first points of the period to give the Gators a 59-35 advantage. Although Medwid played just 15 minutes in the game, she led the team in scoring with a season-high 17 points on 6-10 shooting from the field, 5-6 from behind the arc.

Allegheny’s bench took over in the second half as junior guard Jenna Raglani (Indiana, Pa) and senior forward Jackie Tubo (Altoona, Pa.) each contributed nine points to the stat sheet. Raglani’s nine points were also a season high, while Tubo grabbed three rebounds and had two assists in the victory.

The Yeowomen played the Gators evenly throughout most of the second half, but could not cut the Gator lead to any less than 20 points. No Allegheny player was on the court for more than 18 minutes, as 13 Gators played for at least 10 minutes in the game.

McDonough finished the contest with 10 points and eight rebounds as fellow senior guard Raelynn Miles (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) added seven points to go along with five assists and three steals. Sophomore forward Jen Latronica (Gibsonia, Pa./Deer Lakes) tied McDonough for the team lead with eight boards and also blocked two shots.

Many offensive season team highs were broken tonight as: points (99, previous high 87), field goals made and attempted (41-87, previous highs were 33 and 76), three-point field goals made and attempted (12-29, previous highs were 9-25), turnovers committed (8, previous season low was 10) and most importantly, assists. The Gators had 29 assists on 41 made field goals, breaking their previous season high of 24 assists, set Dec. 29 against Mt. Union.

For the visiting Yeowomen, guards Cristina Briboneria and Nicole Buford scored 26 and 23 points respectively.

Allegheny will travel to Wittenberg (OH) University and then Earlham (IND) College for back-to-back conference games this weekend on Friday and Saturday.
