GRANVILLE, Ohio – The Allegheny College men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams both had a qualifier for the 2005 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend, although it happened at different sites.

While the rest of the team was at the NCAC Relays at Denison (Ohio) University on Saturday, Gator senior Kevin Pool (New Windsor, Md./ Westminster) ran at the Penn State National Open Friday night. Pool, the only Division III runner in the event, not only competed in the 5,000-meter run, he took first place with a time of 14:32.13.

His time was not only more than two seconds faster than second place finisher Paul Stozier of Army, but it was a provisional qualifying time for the NCAA meet and a new school-record, shaving more than eight seconds off the previous mark held by current Allegheny assistant coach Dan Princic.

At the NCAC Relays, both Gator teams finished third overall but the big news was on the women’s side, where senior Leah Shouey (Franklin, Pa.) ran a provisional qualifying time for NCAA championships in the 5,000. She crossed in a time of 17:38.23, which was 54 seconds faster than the second place runner and was also more than nine seconds better than the previous school record, set by Nicole Morandi in 2002.

As for the teams, the Gator men scored 65 points in finishing behind only Ohio Wesleyan University (86) and Wabash (Ind.) College (79). Allegheny had great individual efforts by sophomore thrower Pat Confer (Bradford, Pa.), who had the best throw in the shot put (49-7.25), as he and senior Bryan Johnston (Pittsburgh, Pa./ Northgate) won the shot put relay; freshman Conrad Rapp (Medway, Mass./ Worcester Academy) clearing 13-0 to record the best individual performance in the pole vault; and junior Dave Griffin (Pittsburgh, Pa./ Montour) placing third in 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.39 seconds.

In addition, Allegheny’s 800-meter relay (1:35.20) and distance medley relay (10:45.30) teams took second overall and the 3,200-meter relay team crossed in third place overall (8:29.44).

The women’s team, who’s 79 points narrowly placed them third behind Denison (82) and Ohio Wesleyan (81), had three “relay” teams place first overall, including the shot put, triple jump and 5,000 meter run teams. A pair of freshmen made up the shot put team, as Elizabeth Earley (Venetia, Pa./ Peters Township) threw 36-4.25 to take second individually and Krystal Baldwin (N. Middlesex, Mass.) had a best throw of 33-3 to finish third.

In the triple jump, freshman Emily Pfeufer (St. Mary’s, Pa./ Elk County Catholic) had the second best individual effort (32-2.25) and senior Erika Almquist (Lexington, Mass.) came in fourth (31-7.75) to earn first place as a team. And along with Shouey’s effort in the 5,000, senior Katie Kuba (Buckhannon, W.Va.) recorded the fifth-best time at 19:27.65 to give the Gators the first place points.

Other relays to earn top three placements were the high jump and distance medley teams pulling in second places and the long jump, 55-hurdles and 3,200 relays earning third place points.

Both teams are now off until Friday, Feb. 11, when they will compete at Baldwin-Wallace’s Sparky Adams Invitational.
