Jan 26, 2005

Box Score

MEADVILLE, Pa. – Four Gators scored in double figures and three recorded double-doubles, as Allegheny was able to outlast the Wooster (OH) Fighting Scots 73-59. Allegheny improves its record to 12-5 overall, 5-4 NCAC, while Wooster falls to 8-9 overall, 4-5 NCAC.

It took a while for both teams to get on the scoreboard in a low-scoring first half, with Allegheny jumping ahead early to a 13-4 lead at the 11:53 mark. Junior guard Valery Medwid (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) netted five points with two foul shots and a three-pointer during that span. However, the Gators offense went cold and they only managed to score four points in the next eight minutes of the game, surrendering the lead to Wooster at the 4:22 mark in the first half.

A myriad of turnovers by both teams kept the score low and turned the first half into a defensive battle, with the Fighting Scots leading 27-25 at halftime.

The Gators were a totally different team in the second half, shooting 51% from the field and again creating turnovers with an aggressive defensive attack. At the 13:43 mark in the second half, Allegheny would mount a double-digit lead with a score of 43-32 on a three-pointer by sophomore guard Katie Kestler (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon), a lead they would not relinquish.

An 18-24 (75%) shooting performance by the Gators from the foul line kept the lead close to double-digits throughout the second half and a strong rebounding effort, especially on the offensive end, was instrumental in the Gator victory.

Junior forward Courtney Steding (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) led the way for Allegheny in the second half as she scored 13 of her 15 points, pulled down seven rebounds and converted all seven of her free throw attempts. For the game, she scored 15 points, grabbed 11 boards, had four steals, and also led the team with five assists.

Sophomore guard Megan Vasilisin (Munhall, Pa./Oakland Catholic) led the Gators off the bench with 18 points and also matched Steding with 11 rebounds. Senior forward Meredith McDonough (Pittsburgh, Pa./ Oakland Catholic) rounded out the trio of Gators with double-doubles as she chipped in with 12 points and 10 boards. Medwid was the fourth Gator in double figures as she netted 12 points and three assists.

Wooster forward Carly Loehrke led her team with 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

Next up for the Gators is a trip to Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday for a game at 1:00 PM. Earlier this season, Allegheny beat the Battling Bishops 83-67.
