Gator Track Teams Compete at Baldwin-Wallace

BEREA, Ohio – The first meet of 2005 saw the Allegheny College track and field teams compete at Baldwin-Wallace (Ohio) College Invitational and the Gators had several solid performances from both the men’s and women’s teams.
On the women’s side, senior Leah Shouey (Franklin, Pa.) took first place in two events. She won the one-mile run with a time of 5:05.39, which is a provisional qualifying time for the 2005 NCAA Indoor Championships. Shouey also crossed first in the 3,000 with a winning time of 10:25.97, crushing the field by nearly 28 seconds.
The Gator distance runners had a solid meet overall, as sophomore Rashelle Glass (New Castle, Pa./ Shenango) claimed fourth place in the 800 (2:33.23) and freshman Molly McGravey (Orchard Park, N.Y.) took fifth place in the 1,000 (3:25.78).
In the 55-meter hurdles, freshman Caitlin Nay (Uniontown, Ohio/ Green) earned a spot in the finals by finishing eighth in the preliminaries with a time of 9.76. May went to finish seventh in the finals.
In the field events, a pair of jumpers began their seasons well. Freshman Emily Pfeufer (St. Mary’s, Pa./ Elk County Catholic) took third place in the triple jump (32-5.75) and fifth place in the long jump (15-11). Senior Erica Almquist (Lexington, Mass.) was right behind Pfeufer in the triple (31-2) and took seventh in the long jump (15-3.25). In the pole vault, freshman Sarah Sammel (Pittsburgh, Pa./ Bethel Park) finished second after clearing 10 feet.
The men’s team had one first place finisher Friday night in senior Kevin Pool (New Windsor, Md./ Westminster). The two-time cross country All-American for the Gators won the 3,000 with a time of 8:34.44 (attached results have an incorrect time) to set a new Allegheny College record. Two other AC runners, freshman Chris Corkins (Horseheads, N,Y.) and sophomore Marco Dozzi (Pittsburgh, Pa./ Chartiers Valley), placed sixth and seventh respectively.
Another distance runner that grabbed a top six placing was freshman Ryan Place (Meshoppen, Pa./ Elk Lake), who crossed in sixth place in the 1,000 (2:45.80).
In the sprint events, sophomore Josh Rhue (Brimley, Mich./ Clonlara) ran his way into the finals of the 55-meter dash and then placed sixth overall with a time of 6.74 seconds. He also finished 10th in the 300 with a time of 38.70. Junior Dave Griffin (Pittsburgh, Pa./ Montour) also had to earn a spot in the finals and his time of 8.45 seconds in the 55 hurdles placed him sixth.
In the field, sophomore thrower Pat Confer (Bradford, Pa.) took fifth place in the shot put (44-7) and sixth overall in the weight throw (43-4.25). In their collegiate meet, freshman Conrad Rapp (Medway, Mass./ Worcester Academy) took third in the pole vault (13-11.25) and freshman Justin Schwab (Kill Buck, N.Y./ Salamanca) claimed fourth place in the high jump (6-0).
Both the men’s and women’s teams will return to action Sat., Jan. 29 at the NCAC Relays, which will be held at Denison (Ohio) University.
