Boxscore

Meadville, Pa. - Allegheny’s junior guard Courtney Steding (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) had the complete package against Ohio Wesleyan University in women’s basketball Saturday afternoon. Steding was one of five Gators (10-5, 3-4) in double figures and blocked a career-high five shots on the defensive side in an 83-67 thrashing of the Bishops (10-5, 4-2).

Allegheny started with a 10-2 run fueled by a three-point play by senior guard Meredith McDonough (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic), a shot from behind the arc by sophomore guard Katie Kestler (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) and five turnovers by the Bishops.

The Gators then built their lead to 24-13 at the 10:19 mark with six consecutive baskets, ending with another trey by Kestler.

Allegheny scored a total of 12 points off turnovers, as they held on to a seven-point lead at the break.

The home team started the second 20 minutes where they left off the first, scoring on their first possession. Using two three-pointers by junior guard Valery Medwid (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour), along with three turnovers and four missed shots by the Bishops, Allegheny stormed to a 14-2 run and a 17-point lead.

Allegheny held their biggest lead of 25 points with 10 minutes remaining in the game when senior guard Raelynn Miles (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) converted a lay-up off a pass from Steding.

Ohio Wesleyan staged a comeback but Allegheny had an answer for nearly every play as the deficit was only cut to 12. The Gators finished strong, building their lead back to 21 points, as the game ended in a 16-point win.

McDonough was the Gators leading scorer with 15 points. Steding finished with 14 points, six boards, six assists, five blocks, and four steals. Other Gators in double figures were Medwid with 12, junior guard Caitlin Murtagh (Bethel Park, Pa./Seton-LaSalle) with 12, and sophomore forward Meghan Vasilisin (Munhall, Pa./Oakland Catholic) with 11. Murtagh also grabbed a team-high seven boards.

After a slow start, Erica Brizendine finished with a game-high 22 points for Ohio Wesleyan. Kelly Heil recorded a double-double in the loss with 16 points and 12 rebounds.

The Gators return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Hiram (Ohio) College for a 6:00 p.m. tip.
