Allegheny Tops Earlham For First NCAC Win

MEADVILLE, Pa. - After a disappointing first half by both teams, Allegheny ran away with the second half to defeat Earlham (Ind.) College 62-39 in women’s basketball action. Allegheny improves to 8-4 and 1-3 in the conference, as Earlham falls to 2-9 and 0-4. The win also extends AC’s win streak to five games.
The first half was plagued with turnovers and poor shooting for both teams, as it ended with Allegheny on top 24-20. Each team turned the ball over 13 times with neither team having anything to show for it. Earlham shot just 20% from the field, while Allegheny dropped 29.4% of their shots. The Gators led the entire half with the score being tied once at the 18:37 mark after both teams hit their first attempts.
The Gators started the second 20 minutes hitting four of five shots from the field and two free throws to go up by 10 points, 35-25.
Junior guard Valery Medwid (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) started a three-point barrage by the home team, as she hit the first of four treys. Also connecting from behind the arc were junior guard Beth Van Parys (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy), junior forward Kristen Lyzen (Brook Park, Ohio/Midpark), and sophomore guard Katie Kestler (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon).
The bench continued to do work for the home team as they sped to four fast break baskets. Junior guard Jenna Raglani (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) assisted once after her own rebound and once after a board by sophomore forward Jennifer Latronica (Gibsonia, Pa./Deer Lakes). The Allegheny bench scored 36 points for the night.
Medwid finished with 10 points for the victors and connected twice from long distance. Freshman guard Stephanie Izurieta (Mason, Ohio/William Mason) scored a career-high seven points, while Latronica blocked a career-high five shots. Sophomore forward Meghan Vasilisin (Munhall, Pa./Oakland Catholic) grabbed a team-high nine rebounds in 19 minutes of action.
Lisa Vanderkolk of Earlham led all scorers with 13 points. She also grabbed nine boards to lead the Quakers.
The Gators return to the court tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. when Wittenberg (Ohio) University comes to the Wise Center.
