Dec 9, 2004

Boxscore

Grambier, Ohio (Dec. 9, 2004) — A twelve point performance by senior forward Jackie Tubo (Altoona, Pa.) in the first half kept the Gators alive as the Kenyon Ladies drained five first half three-pointers to take a 31-21 lead. However, a second half drought by the Gators led to a 61-48 win for the home team Thursday night.

Seven early turnovers and missed opportunities by the Gators coupled by a quick start for the Ladies put Allegheny down early. The Ladies started with a 12-4 run they increased to 18-5 before juniors Kristen Lyzen (Brook Park, Ohio/Midpark) and Beth Van Parys (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) hit back-to-back jumpers for Allegheny, and Tubo connected on a left-hand post move to close the deficit to seven with 9:05 to play.

The Gators would commit just one turnover during the remaining nine minutes and Tubo would put up 10 straight points to answer Kenyon’s performance of four baskets and three free throws.

Allegheny went to the driving game in the early goings of the second half to get to the foul line. A lay-up and foul shot by junior Caitlin Murtagh (Bethel Park, Pa./Seton LaSalle) which was surrounded by four free throws by junior Valery Medwid (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) help cut the Kenyon lead to 38-33 with 14:36 to play.

Just two baskets in ten minutes by the Gators let the Ladies regain their lead and put 15 points between the teams before going on to win 61-48 by making eight of 12 free throws in the last three minutes.

The Gators drop to 3-4 on the year and 0-3 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. The Ladies improve to 6-1 and 3-0 for the year.

Tubo led AC with 12 points while Medwid put up nine and grabbed four rebounds.

The Ladies had three players reach double figures. Hilary Gowins led all scorers with 13 points, while Katy Zeanah and Alisha Moreno dropped in 11 points. Zeanah also grabbed eight boards to lead the Ladies to a 45-41 rebounding edge.

The Gators are in action again at home on December 20 when Westminster visits the Wise Center for a 7:00 tip-off.
