Dec 4, 2004

Boxscore

MEADVILLE, Pa. (Dec. 4, 2004) — The fast start to the second half for the Gators fell short as the Denison Big Red came out on top 55-46 in women’s basketball action Saturday in Meadville.

The Big Red controlled the glass in the first half (27-20), including 12 offensive rebounds and used that to take a 29-22 halftime lead. Denison used 10 second chance points and 7-12 free throw shooting, coupled with a nine-minute drought by Allegheny to mount their lead.

The early goings of the second half was a different game for Allegheny as they started with a 9-1 run to take a 31-30 lead. Four offensive rebounds and two put backs by senior forward Meredith McDonough (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) sparked the Gators.

The lead would switch hands three times before Denison took the lead for good with nine minutes to play on a trey by Kristen Sheffield to go up 42-39. The Gators went through another scoring drought as they connected on only one field goal for the remaining time.

Neither team shot well as the teams combined for 84 missed attempts and neither topped 30% shooting from the field.

McDonough led the Gators with 13 points and eight boards as junior forward Courtney Steding (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) worked the boards for 12 rebounds. Junior guard Caitlin Murtagh (Bethel Park, Pa./Seton-LaSalle) came off the bench to score nine points on 3-6 shooting.

Emma Woodward poured in 18 points and grabbed five offensive boards for the Big Red as Kristen Sheffield recorded a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Tammy Hoch also contributed with 11 points, including two lay-ups in the last two minutes of play.

The Big Red improve to 4-1 and 2-0 in the NCAC as the Gators even out at 3-3 for the year but fall to 0-2 in conference play.

The Gators return to the court on Thursday, December 9 when they travel to Kenyon (Ohio) College for a 7:00 tip.
