Wooster, Ohio - In the unkindly field conditions, it was hard to get something solid but junior back Dave Recker (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) found the net for Allegheny College men's soccer team and sent the Gators to the NCAC Finals with a 1-0 win over the top-seeded College of Wooster Friday afternoon in the conference tournament semifinals.
Allegheny out-shot Wooster 6-2 in the first half, but Fighting Scots goalkeeper David Trevleven made three saves to keep the game scoreless at the half.
Both teams’ goalkeepers made three saves in the second half but Allegheny got one shot by Trevleven that made the difference. In the 69th minute, senior forward Marc Scuilli (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) sent a corner kick to the left side of the box that Recker headed into the upper portion of the net and in turn, gave Allegheny all they would need to win.
Allegheny’s junior keeper Brian Manougian (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) made three saves in the second half, including a sliding save with 14 minutes remaining to preserve the win and earn his sixth shutout of the year.
The Gators move on to play Denison (Ohio) University at 1:00 PM at Wooster on Saturday. The Big Red advanced to the title game by defeating Ohio Wesleyan University 3-1 in penalty kicks after the game was scoreless following regulation and two overtimes. Denison defeated AC 3-1 in Granville, Ohio, back on Oct. 9, but since then, the Gators have won six of seven matches.
It's also the second championship game in three years for Head Coach Angelo Panzetta's team, who fell by a 1-0 count in the 2002 title tilt to Ohio Wesleyan.
