Late First Half Goal Hands Allegheny a Loss

Richmond, Ind. - The Allegheny College women’s soccer team faced a tough defeat by Earlham College 2-1 on Saturday. The loss drops their record to 9-6-2 and 4-4 in the NCAC.
Earlham scored first on a goal by Rachel Applefield in the 20th minute of play. The Gators bounced back and tied the game at the 35:39 mark on a goal by freshman midfielder Ashley Hughes (Wexford, Pa./ North Allegheny), her team leading seventh of the season. The goal came off a corner kick by freshman forward Rebecca Rotoloni (McMurray, Pa./ Peters Township).
A late first half goal by Earlham’s Angelique Owanga in the 44th minute of the game held up for the 2-1 win.
Allegheny junior keeper Beth Van Parys (Erie, Pa./ Villa Maria Academy) made three saves in the game.
Despite the loss, the Gators will travel to Ohio Wesleyan University on Wednesday to face the Battling Bishops at 7 p.m. in the semi-finals of the NCAC Tournament. Although the Gators were tied with Kenyon and Wooster, Allegheny earned the NCAC berth with victories over both teams.
