Gators Upended in Overtime at OWU

Oct 16, 2004

Box Score

DELAWARE, Ohio – Despite a school-record tying three goals from senior forward Josh Johnson (Murrysville, Pa./ Franklin Regional), the Allegheny College men’s soccer team (5-7-1, 1-4) fell 4-3 in overtime tonight at Ohio Wesleyan University (12-2-1, 4-1).

Johnson opened the scoring in the 40th minute when he headed in a long entry pass into the box from junior Dave Recker (Pittsburgh, Pa./ Baldwin). However, the Bishops would get two goals in the final five minutes of the half to carry a 2-1 lead into intermission. OWU converted a penalty kick in the 42nd minute and then caught a big break for the go-ahead goal. Gator keeper Brian Manougian (Rye, New Hampshire/ Portsmouth) went to clear a ball with just nine seconds left in the half and it bounced off an Allegheny player and rolled into the net for a 2-1 Bishop lead at halftime.

In the 65th minute, Johnson collected his second goal of the game, this one unassisted, when he gathered in a loose ball in front of the net and fired a shot inside the left post to knot the score at 2-2. The hosts would take the lead back in the 74th minute when Jon Glick headed in a corner kick from Ryan Martin but Johnson would have an answer less than a minute later. He rifled a shot from the top of the box that OWU keeper Jamison Dague got both hands on but could not control. The shot rolled into the net and the match was tied 3-3, which is where it stood at the end of regulation.

In the extra session, OWU picked up the game-winner in the 97th minute. Brandon Bianco ran under a long ball from Alan Yost and fired in the game-winner to send Allegheny to its seventh defeat of the season. The Bishops out-shot Allegheny by a 16-12 margin in the game and also had an 8-2 advantage in corners.

For the Gators, Manougian registered two saves, as did Dague for OWU.

Despite the loss, Johnson, who now has eight goals and 19 points this season, was the bright spot. This is the 11th time a Gator player has scored three goals in a single game and is the second time that Johnson has tallied a hat trick in his career. Johnson found the back of the net three times in a 5-0 victory over Marietta (Ohio) College Sept. 17, 2003.

It’s also the second time this season that an Allegheny player has scored three times. Sophomore midfielder Chris Fedele (Williamsville, N.Y.) recorded the hat trick in a Sept. 25 victory at Kenyon (Ohio) College.
