Meadville, Pa. - The Allegheny men’s soccer team lost their second conference match of the year 3-1 to visiting Oberlin (Ohio) College Wednesday afternoon. The Gators fall to 4-5-1 (1-2 NCAC) on the year as the Yeomen improve to 6-4-3 (1-0-1 NCAC).
The Yeomen benefited from an early goal just 1:17 into the game when Samuel Zackheim sent a forward cross to Josh Treuhaft who dribbled in for the score past Allegheny junior keeper Brian Manougian (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth). Oberlin then went up 2-0 in the 15th minute when Zackheim took a left-footed shot to the far post that curled around a diving Manougian.
Allegheny would cut the lead in half with a goal by senior midfielder Ben Montgomery (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) six minutes later. Senior forward Josh Johnson (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) gave a pass off the end line that Montgomery put in the near post with his right foot.
The Gators continued to pound shots at the Oberlin defense but couldn’t find the equalizer. Allegheny out-shot Oberlin 19-6 for the game and took eight corner kicks to Oberlin’s three.
The Yeomen added to their lead in the 71st minute when Treuhaft sent a pass from the end line, past a diving Tad Rupp (Buckhannon, W.Va./Buckhannon-Upshur), to the foot of charging Kevin Costante for the goal.
Johnson led the Gators attack with seven shot attempts as Rupp finished with one save in goal for Allegheny. Manougian did not record a save in his 45 minutes of work.
Goalkeeper Clayton Combe gave up one goal and made two saves for the Yeomen in the first half while Lincoln Smith made three saves in the second half.
The Gators face Denison (Ohio) University on the road Saturday, October 9 and do not return home until Saturday, October 23 when they face Wabash on Homecoming at 1:30 p.m.
