Meadville, Pa. - The Allegheny men’s soccer team fell in non-conference action with foe John Carroll (Ohio) University Wednesday afternoon 2-1.

Early in the seventh minute, the Blue Streaks sent a ball across the box that appeared to be an easy clearance for the Gators but was put in the back of the net instead as an own goal. The Gators would fight to even the score with eight shots to one in the first half but the score remained 1-0.

The Gators’ sense of urgency remained as they continued to fire shots at John Carroll’s keeper John Garber throughout the second half. Time after time, Garber made the save, until the 75:42 mark when a Blue Streak foul awarded Allegheny a free kick. Freshman midfielder Jeremy Garbutt (St. Louis, Mo./ John Burroughs School) sent the free kick high and to the center of the goal where senior midfielder Ben Montgomery (McMurray, Pa./ Peters Township) headed the ball directly in the low post of the goal for the equalizer.

Seven minutes after the Gators tied the match, Dusty Stelmak and Kevin Pap used a give-and-go to put the Blue Streaks ahead 2-1. Stelmak fired a low far post shot off Pap’s pass by Gator junior keeper Brian Manougian (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth).

Allegheny’s counter-attack came up short, as the game would end in a 2-1 defeat.

The Gators had 11 of 18 shots on goal and out-shot the Blue Streaks 18-8. The Gators also held the advantage in corner kicks 9-4.

Manougian finished with two saves for the Gators as Garber kept 10 shots out of the net for John Carroll.

Allegheny turns to conference play on Saturday, October 2 when the Tigers of Wittenberg (Ohio) University visit Robertson Field at 1:30 p.m.
