Meadville, Pa. - A late second half goal by sophomore midfielder Emily Spencer (Evergreen, Colo.) lifted the Gators to an eventual 3-1 win over visiting Westminster in women’s soccer.
Allegheny controlled possession and opportunities in the first half and finally connected for a score when freshman forward Meghan Borden (Harrison City, Pa./Penn Trafford) scored her first career goal one minute and fourteen seconds before the end of the first half. A throw-in by Allegheny, that wasn’t cleared well by the Titans, landed at Borden’s foot, who then curled a left-footed shot to the far post over Westminster goalkeeper Nicole Drummond for the 1-0 lead.
The Gators continued their play in the early part of the second half before a free kick was awarded to the Titans for a hand-ball outside the box. Westminster’s Kaitllyn Etzel-Hardman gave a short pass to Brittany McKee, who slid a pass to Scarlett Bretz for the score from two yards out.
With the goal, the Titans pulled momentum on their side and were once again awarded a free kick, this time 30 yards out. Etzel-Hardman sent a bullet that deflected off the inside part of the cross bar, straight into Allegheny’s junior goalkeeper Beth Van Parys’ (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) hands for the save.
Things seemed to turn around with momentum switching back to Allegheny. The Gators took three shots in the following 14 minutes and took the lead when Spencer scored her second goal in two games. Freshman defender Kelsey Boivin (Albuquerque, N.M.) sent a corner kick that sailed over the keeper’s head, but wasn’t cleared out by the defense. Spencer kept her cool and neatly deposited the four-yard shot for the game-winning goal.
Two minutes later, Allegheny was awarded a penalty kick when Borden was fouled by the keeper and senior midfielder Ashley Kittridge (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) struck the PK to the low post past Drummond.
Allegheny held a 19-8 shot advantage and a 5-3 corner kick advantage.
Van Parys finished the game with three saves while Drummond made nine for Westminster.
The Gators start NCAC action on Saturday, October 2 when they host Wittenberg (Ohio) University at 11 a.m. at Robertson Field.
