Sep 21, 2004

Boxscore

Two first career goals by Gator freshman led the Allegheny women’s soccer team to victory over visiting Penn State Behrend Lions 2-0 on Tuesday afternoon.

Play was virtually even through the opening minutes of the game until a free kick was awarded to Allegheny, in the final third of the field, at the 27:36 mark. Freshman defensive back, Kelsey Boivin (Albuquerque, N.M.) sent the free kick to the near post and watched as it bounced over Behrend keeper Colleen Applebaugh for the score.

The Lions came out on the offensive in the second half and had chances to equalize as they took 10 shots for the period but couldn’t find the net.

Freshman midfielder Rebecca Rotoloni (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) redirected a defensive clearance from right to left which sailed to the upper far post over Applebaugh for the insurance goal in the 73rd minute.

Behrend refused to give in as they fired three shots at Gator keeper Beth Van Parys (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) in the last five minutes of play.

Allegheny out-shot Behrend 11-10 and took six corner kicks to Behrend’s four.

Van Parys finished with four saves in the shutout as Applebaugh also made four saves.

The Gators next travel to Grove City on Saturday, September 25 before returning home on Monday, September 27 to host Westminster.
