Gators Tie in Storm

A game-tying goal by Allegheny senior forward Jill Gray (Northeast, Pa.) at the 78:59 mark beat the lightning storm in Meadville by 24 seconds, as the Gator women's soccer team tied the Carnegie Mellon Tartans 2-2.
Allegheny took an early lead in the 19th minute when junior midfielder Jen Bilec (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) placed a corner kick right on Leah Karpa’s head, who promptly deposited the ball in the far post corner for the 1-0 lead.
Carnegie Mellon never gave in and scored twice in six minutes to take the lead at the half. The first goal came in the 37th minute when Allegheny junior keeper Beth Van Parys (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) left her net to challenge a ball that bounced over her at an angle and right to the foot of forward Kasey Stever, who slipped it in the net. Tartan forward Hallie Dumont was credited with the assist. Stever struck again, this time with a header to the upper net off a direct kick by Vanessa McClain-Duer three minutes before the end of the half.
Neither team controlled possession in the second half and both totaled four shots.
With the rain falling, Gray received a clearance from the Tartan defense and immediately took a right-footed shot from 25 yards out and beat the keeper high and to the near post. Twenty-four seconds later, lightning was sited and the game was called after the storm didn’t let up.
Van Parys finished the game with three saves while Carnegie Mellon’s Megan Monroe also recorded three saves.
The Gators next host Frostburg State (Md.) University on Saturday, September 18 at 12 p.m. as part of Allegheny College’s Community and Alumni Day.
