The Allegheny Gators men’s soccer team won their season opener when junior midfielder Dave Roberts (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) scored in the 76th minute to top Mount Union College 2-1.

Allegheny controlled possession most of the first half of play, taking 14 shots to Mount Union’s seven. The Gators scored early when senior midfielder Ben Montgomery (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) headed a corner kick from senior forward Josh Johnson (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) in the 18th minute.

Allegheny continued to take their shots before the Purple Raiders scored the equalizer. Sophomore forward Trevor Beach (Brecksville, Ohio/Broadview Hts.) received a pass from freshman midfielder Steven Gillespie (Brecksville, Ohio/Broadview Hts.) through traffic and took a shot, which deflected off Gators junior keeper Brian Manougian (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) and into the far post.

After the goal, a second yellow card was issued to freshman defender Pat Bowman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon), disqualifying him from the game, causing the Gators to play a man down for 48 minutes.

Neither team mounted a scoring attack for most of the second half as play was contained to the middle third of the field. Allegheny put together an opportunity when a cross was sent from the right side of the field, causing Raiders sophomore keeper Eric Sebor (Solon, Ohio/Solon) to leave the net. Senior forward Marc Sciulli (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) flicked the keeper deflection to Roberts, who fired a shot to the far post for the game-winning goal.

Manougian recorded five saves for Allegheny, while Mount Union’s junior goalkeeper Mike Corum (Brecksville, Ohio/Brecksville) started the game and made six saves in 45 minutes of action.

For the game Allegheny owned a 17-12 advantage in shots and a 7-1 advantage in corners.

It was a physical game from start to finish, as 33 fouls were called, including a pair of yellow cards for each team.
