Storybook Ending Eludes Cinderella Gators
May 1, 2004 The Allegheny College women’s lacrosse team’s storybook season came to a close on Saturday afternoon with a loss to the College of Wooster Fighting Scots, 10-6, in the championship game of the North Coast Athletic Conference tournament. The Gators, who had never finished above .500 in the 11-year history of the program, set school-records for wins and consecutive wins this season as they finished 8-6.
Allegheny placed four players on the all-tournament team, led by junior Ashley Lemmon (Allison Park, Pa./Winchester) who finished with seven goals in two games during the tourney. Lemmon had five in the Gators opening round win over Denison and added two more on Saturday.
Joining Lemmon were senior goalie Beth McLaughlin (Brandywine, Md./Thomas Stone) and sophomores Ashley Rogerson (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) and Emily Deering (Hollis, Maine/Bonny Eagle). McLaughlin stopped 22 shots in the tournament while allowing just 20 goals. Rogerson finished with two goals and an assist while Deering had four goals.
Allegheny led Wooster, 3-0, early in the game but the Scots rallied to take a 4-3 lead at halftime. The Gators tied the game at 5-5 in the second half, but Wooster rattled off five straight goals to put Allegheny away for good.
