Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 1997

The Allegheny Athletic Hall of Fame welcomed six new members in ceremonies Oct. 3 at The Country Club. The inductees were Jay Lewis '70, football; Robert Delgreco '76, basketball; the 1977-78 golf team; Brian Stadnik '87, basketball; Eddie Taylor '87, football/baseball; and Melissa Vogel '87, basketball/softball.

Lewis won first team All-PAC honors as both a wide receiver and defensive back, one of a handful of Allegheny players to accomplish the feat on both sides of the ball. He still holds five Allegheny receiving records, including receiving yards in a season, with 909 his senior season, receptions in a season (53), single game receiving yards (254), and touchdown receptions in a game (4). As a senior in 1969, Lewis also led the Gators in interceptions.

Delgreco, a point guard, set school records for assists in a game (17), season (176) and career (336) by the time of his graduation. He still ranks sixth all-time in single season and career assists. As a junior in 1974-75, he led the Gators to their first PAC championship and the first NCAA Division III Tournament bid in school history. A GTE Academic All-American, Delgreco earned an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, one of only three given to Div. III players.

The 1977-78 Golf Team finished second at the NCAA Championship and won its third PAC championship in four years. Between 1977-1980, an incredible eight members of that team -- Jim Allen '80, Jack Cline '81, Tom Hantke, John Jones '79, Bob Orr '81, Phil Rybecky '80, Greg Stone '78 (a co-captain) and Bill Watt '80 -- earned All-American honors. In addition to those eight, the team included Scott Amsdell '80, Dave Curran '80, Rich Klein '80, Paul Lackner '80 and Jack McCauley '78 (a co-captain) as well as its coach, Norm Sundstrom.

Stadnik is Allegheny's all-time leading scorer with 1,694 points. His single season point totals of 563 (1986-87) and 528 (1984-85) still rank as first and third in school history. Stadnik earned All-NCAC honors in 1985, 1986 and 1987, and his senior year, he led the Gators to the NCAC championship and the NCAA Tournament. In 1994, Stadnik was named to Allegheny's all-decade team.

Taylor earned All-NCAC honors in both football and baseball. In football, he ranks ninth in school history in rushing yards with 1,866. He accumulated 2,941 career all-purpose yards, and also still holds the record for kickoff return yards for a season and career average (23.0). On the diamond, he played outfield and holds a career .338 batting average. Taylor also swiped 41 career bases and belted 15 home runs.

Vogel, also a two-sport star, was a first team All-American at center field in 1986, when she hit .342, drove in 29 runs and stole 19 bases. In basketball, Vogel was a two-time All-NCAC pick. At the completion of her career, she ranked second on Allegheny's career rebounding list, with 620, and seventh in scoring with 825 points.
