2001 inductees share a combined six national championships
Meadville, Pa. - The Allegheny College Athletic Hall of Fame nomination and selection committees have chosen seven alumni for induction in the Hall of Fame. The annual induction ceremony will be held in conjunction with Homecoming Weekend, Friday, October 5, at The Country Club in Meadville.
This year's inductees are Garrett Daggett '89 (basketball), Jeff Filkovski '91 (football/baseball), Marci Hennessey '91 (swimming), Melissa Moody-White '91 (diving), Georgann Morin '89 (soccer), Kate Thoman '91 (swimming), Allyn White '39 (soccer/football/basketball/track).
Daggett was a forward selected to the Allegheny basketball All-Century team, named in observance of the 100th season of varsity basketball in 1996. At the time of his graduation, Daggett was second in Allegheny history in points scored (1,336) and third in rebounds (669) and steals (139). He is also the school's all-time leader in blocked shots with 121. Currently, Daggett ranks third in both scoring and rebounding and is sixth in steals, and he is also tied for second with 107 career games played. He was a three-time first team All-NCAC selection, in 1987, '88 and '89, and was the NCAC Player of the Year in 1989. During his career, Daggett helped the Gators to three NCAC regular season titles, a pair of NCAC Tournament Championships and three NCAA Division III Tournament appearances.
Filkovski is already a member of the Hall of Fame as part of the 1990 NCAA Championship football team, which was inducted last year. This fall, he will be inducted as an individual. As the quarterback, Filkovski led the Gators to the 1990 national championship earning consensus All-America honors from Associated Press, Champion and Football Gazette along the way. Filkovski currently ranks sixth at Allegheny in career passing yards (2,364) and TD passes (19) and second in completion percentage (.590) and pass efficiency (143.6). During the 1990 championship season, Filkovski was the first team All-NCAC quarterback and was the second team punter. That season, he threw for a then-school record 1,604 yards, completed 62.4% of his passes and tossed 16 TDs. As a baseball player, Filkovski was a first team All-NCAC pick in 1991 when he drilled 11 home runs, still fourth in a single-season in Gator history. He also stands fourth on the school's all-time home runs list with 26. During his collegiate career, the Gator football team was 36-7-2 and the baseball team was 102-58.
Hennessey was a earned All-America honors in 1987, '89, '90 and '91 and was the national champion in the 100-yard backstroke in 1987, finishing in a time of :59.43. She would later set the school record in that event, which still stands, at :59.27. Hennessey also still holds school records as part of the 800-yard freestyle relay and the 200-yard medley relay. At the time of her graduation, Hennessey was also the Gator record holder in the 200-yard backstroke, 200-yard individual medley and 400-yard medley relay. During Hennessey's four years, the Gators finished fourth twice and 11th twice at the NCAA Championship.
Moody earned All-America honors in 1988, '89 and '91, winning national championships in diving in 1989 and '91. At the 1991 NCAA Championships, Moody was the national champion in the 3-meter competition compiling an NCAA-record 462.70 points, en route to earning NCAA Diver of the Year honors. She was the national champion in the 1-meter in 1989. Moody also owns the school record in the 1-meter dive with 438.0 points. While a Gator, Moody helped the team to a pair of fourth place finishes and one 11th at the NCAA Championship.
Morin along with teammate Nellie Springer-Kraus were the premier scoring tandem in Allegheny soccer history. Morin still stands second all-time in Gator history with 52 career goals and 143 points and is the school's all-time leader in assists with 39. She is one of two Gators to earn All-America honors three times (1986-88), and was named to the first team twice (1986, '87). She also was a three-time All-Mideast Region selection and was a four-time All-NCAC honoree. In each of Morin's four seasons, the Gators won the NCAC Championship and in 1988 the team earned the school's only berth lone berth in the NCAA Tournament. Morin helped the Gators to a four-year record of 56-14-5.
One look at the Gator record book shows that Thoman was one of the top swimmers in Allegheny history. She still holds five individual records and was part of two record relays ten years after graduating. Thoman also earned All-America honors in 1988, '89 and '91 and was a two-time national champion in the 400-yard individual medley. Thoman helped lead the Gators to three fourth place finishes and one 11th at the NCAA Championship during her four-year career. In 1991 she won her second national championship in the 400 IM with a winning time of 4:34.57. Thoman is the current Allegheny record holder in the 200, 500, 1,000 and 1,650-yard freestyles, the 400 IM, the 800-free relay and the 200-yard medley relay.
White earned 12 varsity letters while at Allegheny, competing on the soccer, football, basketball and track and field teams; he excelled, though, in basketball and track. He was a four-year letterwinner on the basketball team and was a teammate of Raymond Shafer from 1935-38. During his junior year, White finished second on the team in scoring behind Shafer, averaging 10.0 points per game. The team was 7-8. His senior year as captain of the squad, White led the team to an 8-6 record, averaging 13.0 points a contest. That season he was named honorable mention all-district by the Pittsburgh Sun-Telegraph and fourth team all-district by the Pittsburgh Press. On the track team, White competed in the half-mile and mile. In 1939 he set a school record in the half-mile of 2:02.06, which stood for many years.
