Allegheny Shoots Past Earlham, 96-47

Feb 7, 2004

After shooting a dismal 20.0 percent during the second half of last night’s 64-57 loss to Wittenberg, the Allegheny College women’s basketball team shot 58.5 percent (38-65) en route to scoring a season-high 96 points in a 96-47 win over Earlham. The point total is the most by the Gator women’s squad since a 103-19 win against Oberlin in 1994.

Allegheny, playing in front of a raucous crowd on 750, had every player on the bench score at least two points as they improved to 12-10 overall and 10-3 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. The Gators have won eight of their last nine games while Earlham has lost their last two to fall to 7-13 and 4-8 in the conference.

Senior guard Jessica Kankoski (Glenshaw, Pa./Fox Chapel) paced the Gator attack with 15 points. Junior guard Raelynn Miles (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) was the only other Allegheny player in double-digit scoring as she dropped 10 points and added four assists and three steals. Freshman Katie Kestler (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) had career highs with nine points and four assists.

Allegheny was never really threatened in this one, stretching out to a 47-28 halftime lead. But then the Gators shooting got even hotter as their 56.3 percent (18-32) first half shooting improved to 60.6 percent (20-33) in the second stanza. Kankoski and Kestler each three three-pointers as the Gators went 9-16 (56.3 percent) from the land of plenty.

Lindsey Chappell led Earlham with 14 points and a game-high nine rebounds while Michelle Behler added 10 points for the Quakers. Earlham, however, managed to shoot just 32.7 percent (18-55) and committed 29 turnovers.

Allegheny returns to action on Saturday, February 14, as they travel to Kenyon for a 2:00 p.m. game.
