Allegheny Defense Holds Off Oberlin, 68-51

February 3, 2004

Holding to the form that has now stretched their win streak to seven games, the Allegheny College women’s basketball team forced Oberlin College into 35 turnovers and came up with 23 steals to post a 68-51 win. The defense held the Yeowomen (6-13, 2-8 North Coast Athletic Conference) to just 32.3 percent (20-62) shooting and had a season-high 12 blocked shots.

Freshman guard Megan Vasilisin (Munhall, Pa./Oakland Catholic) led Allegheny with a career-high 13 points, nailing six of eight shots from the field. Senior guard Jessica Kankoski (Glenshaw, Pa./Fox Chapel) was the only other Gator in double digits as she scored 10 points and also had four steals.

Allegheny never trailed in this game, their seventh straight win, and held a 33-23 lead at the half. Oberlin cut the lead to five points midway through the second half, but the Gators responded with a 7-0 run at the point to take away the Yeowomen’s momentum.

Cristina Briboneria led Oberlin with 11 points while Tranice Harrell added nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

The Gators, now 9-2 in the conference and 11-9 overall, prepare for first-place Wittenberg University on Friday. The Tigers beat Allegheny, 62-55, in Springfield earlier this season, but the Gators are 7-2 at the Wise Center, 5-0 at home in NCAC games. Friday’s contest is slated to tip-off at 5:30 p.m.
