Allegheny Stretches Streak to Five With Win Over Wooster
Jan 28, 2004 The Allegheny College women’s basketball team forced 28 turnovers and had four players reach double-digits in scoring as they rolled to their fifth straight win, a 77-62 victory over the College of Wooster on Wednesday night. The win improves the Gators to 9-9 on the season and 7-2 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.
During their five-game run, turnovers have been the key to Allegheny’s success. Heading into tonight’s game against the Fighting Scots, the Gators had been forcing 27.3 turnovers in the last four wins. They improved on that statistic in Wednesday’s win.
Junior forward Meredith McDonough (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) led all scorers with 19 points as she hit 9-of-12 shots from the field. Senior guard Jessica Kankoski (Glenshaw, Pa./Fox Chapel) added 16 points and eight rebounds. Sophomores Valery Medwid (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) and Courtney Steding (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) had 11 points and 10 points, respectively. The game was Steding’s first since December 9.
The Gators held Wooster to just 32.2 percent shooting while they managed to convert on 41.9 percent (31-74) of their shots. Allegheny held a 49-44 advantage on glass, justifying the 38-24 edge they had on points in the paint.
Alexis Loutitt led Wooster with 17 points, going 6-of-10 from the floor. Lindsey Schaaf added 12 points while Michelle Hall led all players with 12 rebounds.
Allegheny takes on Ohio Wesleyan, who is tied with the Gators for second in the conference, on Saturday, January 31, at the Wise Center. Tip-off is slated for 2:00 p.m.
