Gators Stretch Win Streak To Four With Victory Over Hiram
January 21, 2004
The Allegheny College women’s basketball team tallied 21 steals and forced Hiram College into 30 as turnovers as the Gators cruised to their fourth consecutive victory, 77-36. The Gators are now 8-9 overall, but more importantly have a 6-2 mark in the North Coast Athletic Conference.
Allegheny used a full-court press for much of the game, resulting in 33 points off turnovers and 18 fast break points. Hiram (3-12, 0-7 NCAC), however, was unable to break the press for easy points as they did not a score a fast break point in the game.
In a true team effort, 12 different players scored for Allegheny with just two in double-digits – sophomore guards Caitlin Murtagh (Bethel Park, Pa./Seton LaSalle) with 13 points and Beth Van Parys (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) with 10.
The Gators built a 34-23 lead at the half, but Hiram came out of the locker room with the momentum as they scored the last four points of the half. The Terriers cut the lead to seven, 36-29, with 16:58 left in the game, but sophomore guard Valery Medwid (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) answered with a three-pointer to spark a red-hot Gator second half.
Allegheny shot 60.0 percent (18-30) in the second half while holding the Terriers to just 23.8 percent (5-21) in the stanza.
Jessica Harris led the Terriers with 12 points, 12 rebounds, and five blocked shots in the losing effort.
The Gators take the weekend off before returning to conference play at the College of Wooster on Wednesday, January 28, with a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.
