Allegheny Extends Win Streak To Three

January 17, 2004

The Allegheny College women’s basketball team knocked off first-place Ohio Wesleyan, 61-57, to extend their winning streak to a season-long three games. The Gators, now 7-9 overall but more importantly 5-2 in the North Coast Athletic Conference, handed the Battling Bishops (9-5, 5-1 NCAC) their first conference loss of the season.

Sophomore guard Valery Medwid (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) led Allegheny with a career-high 21 points. Medwin went 5-9 from the field, including 3-5 threes, and hit 8-8 attempts from the charity stripe. As a team, the Gators converted on 21-of-24 free throws while Ohio Wesleyan managed to hit just 16 of their 26 attempts.

The Gators trailed by seven, 31-24, at the half but converted on 16-18 free throw attempts in the second half and allowed Ohio Wesleyan just eight second-half field goals to erase the deficit.

Junior forward Meredith McDonough (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) pitched with 14 points for the Gators. Allegheny leading scorer Jessica Kankoski (Glenshaw, Pa./Fox Chapel) hit just 2-12 shots and was held to five points.

OWU’s Erica Brizedine led all scorers with 22 points and had a game-high 13 rebounds in a losing effort. Kelly Heil added 16 points and eight rebounds while Tifini Ray had 10 points.

Allegheny returns to action on Wednesday, January 21, when they host Hiram in a 6:00 p.m. game at the Wise Center.
