Second Half Run Pushes Gators Past Oberlin, 78-60

Allegheny College and Oberlin College were deadlocked, 54-54, with 7:34 left in regulation. The Gators switched to a full-court press that produced six steals and allowed Allegheny to score the next 24 points, taking a 78-54 lead before Oberlin finally scored again with 1:47 remaining.

Playing at home, the Gators improved to 6-9 overall and 4-2 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Oberlin falls to 2-10, 0-6 in the NCAC.

Junior forward Meredith McDonough (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds, eight offensive, while going 9-of-14 from the field. Sophomore guard Allison Roberts (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) added 10 points, eight rebounds, and four steals coming off the bench while Meghan Vasilisin (Munhall, Pa./Oakland Catholic) continued her impressive freshman campaign with 10 points and five rebounds.

The Allegheny bench, led by Roberts and Vasilisin, accounted for 37 points in the win. Junior guard Raelynn Miles (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry), who also came off the bench, accounted for four of Allegheny’s 18 steals and added eight assists and six points.

The Gators shooting improved from 34.3 (12-35) in the first half, to 51.2 (22-43) in the second half. Oberlin, who held a 33-25 halftime lead, watched the field goal percentage dip from 45.2 percent (14-31) in the opening stanza to 29.0 (9-31) in the second half.

Nicole Burford led Oberlin with 14 points and four rebounds. Cristina Briboneria had 13 points and six boards for the Yeowomen.

Allegheny returns to action on Saturday, January 17 as they travel to Ohio Wesleyan for a 1:00 p.m. game.
