Gators Defense Sparks 64-53 Win Over Kenyon

The Allegheny College women’s basketball team forced Kenyon College into 24 turnovers and held the Ladies to just 32.1 percent shooting to take a 64-53 win in North Coast Athletic Conference action at the David V. Wise Center on Saturday afternoon. The Gators allowed just 17 field goals in the game as they improved to 5-9 on the season and 3-2 in the NCAC.
Junior forward Meredith McDonough (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) and sophomore guard Valery Medwid (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) led the Gators with 12 points each. Senior guard Jessica Kankoski (Glenshaw, Pa./Fox Chapel) added 10 points, seven rebounds and a career-high seven steals.
The Gators had 14 points on Kenyon’s first seven turnovers of the game and finished the contest with 24 points off of turnovers. Allegheny finished with 14 steals.
Freshman guard Meghan Vasilisin (Munhall, Pa./Oakland Catholic) had a game-high 11 boards, including seven offensive, as Allegheny outrebounded Kenyon, 51-47. The Gators finished the game 26-for-79 from the field, shooting 32.9 percent.
Allegheny returns to the Wise Center on Wednesday, January 14, as they play host to Oberlin College in a 7:30 p.m. game.
Kenyon drops to 5-8 overall and 2-3 in the NCAC with the loss.
