Kankoski Surpasses 1,000 Career Points In Loss To Denison

January 7, 2004

Senior guard Jessica Kankoski (Glenshaw, Pa./Fox Chapel) became the 10th player in Allegheny College women’s basketball history to score 1,000 career points in a game on Wednesday night. However, the game didn’t go the Gators way as they dropped a 69-54 decision to Denison University (9-3, 3-1 NCAC) in a showdown of the two third-place teams in the North Coast Athletic Conference.

Kankoski hit a layup with 1:38 left in the game to surpass the 1,000-point mark as she now sits with 1,001 career points. She led the Gators with 13 points and added a career-high 12 rebounds in the loss. Kankoski needed just 68 games to eclipse the 1,000-point mark, becoming one of the quickest players to accomplish the feat. Every other Allegheny player in the 1,000-point club has at least 92 games played.

The Gators and Big Red went into the halftime locker rooms knotted at 28-28, but Denison caught fire in the second half, shooting 54.2 percent (13-for-24) to outpace the visiting Gators, 41-26, over the last 20 minutes.

Emma Woodward led the charge, scoring 15 second half points and finishing with a game-high 25 points. Allegheny committed 21 turnovers in the loss and shot just 36.2 percent.

Senior guard Jamie Parone (Aliquippa, Pa./Quigley Catholic) was the only other Allegheny player in double-digits as she finished with 10 points off the bench.

The Gators, who went into the game tied for third place in the NCAC with Denison, fall to 4-9 overall and 2-2 in the conference with the loss. Allegheny plays host to Kenyon on Saturday, January 10, in a 1:00 p.m. game at the Wise Center.
