Gators Fall On Road To Wittenberg, 62-55

Jan 2, 2004

A second half run proved to be enough to give Wittenberg University a 62-55 win over Allegheny College in North Coast Athletic Conference women’s basketball action on Friday night in Springfield, Ohio. Junior forward Meredith McDonough (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough as the Gators record drops to 3-8 on the season and 1-1 in the NCAC.

A tight game throughout, the team’s went into halftime deadlocked, 31-31. In the second stanza, however, Allegheny failed to get their first field goal until 2:24 had expired, and then didn’t score again until 5:01 had run off the clock. The Tigers, now 6-5 on the season and 2-0 in the NCAC, took advantage with a 9-2 run and led 40-33 with 16:08 left.

Allegheny came back and took the lead on a layup by junior guard Raelynn Miles (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) and went up 43-40 on freshman Meghan Vasilisin’s (Munhall, Pa./Oakland Catholic) basket with 11:47 left.

The Tigers responded with an 11-0 run and never looked back. The Gators never cut the lead to less than four over the remainder of the game.

Allegheny held Wittenberg to 39.7 percent (23-58) shooting, but managed to hit just 10-of-30 themselves in the second half and 22-57 (38.6 percent) in the game. The Gators failed to make a three-pointer in the second half, coming up empty on seven tries.

McDonough hit 6-of-12 shots and was perfect, 4-4, from the charity as Allegheny went 10-for-10 from the line as a team. Senior Jessica Kankoski (Glenshaw, Pa./Fox Chapel) added 13 points for the Gators.

Geri Woessner had 13 points and eight rebounds to lead Wittenberg while Amber Bishop chipped in with 11 points off the bench. The win extended the Tigers NCAC-winning streak to 22 in a row dating back to the 2001-02 season.

Allegheny travels to Earlham on Saturday, January 3, for a 2:00 p.m game.
