Gator Defense, Rebounding Too Much For Wooster
Dec 3, 2003 The Allegheny College women’s basketball team held the College of Wooster to 27.3 percent shooting and outrebounded the visiting Scots by 15 to take a 63-50 win in a North Coast Athletic Conference contest at the David V. Wise Center on Wednesday night. Allegheny secured 57 rebounds to Wooster’s 42, and allowed the Scots to make just nine of 36 shots in the first half.
Three players scored in double digits for the Gators led by Meredith McDonough (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) who recorded her third double-double of the season with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Jessica Kankoski (Glenshaw, Pa./Fox Chapel) also recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds while Caitlin Murtagh (Bethel Park, Pa./Seton LaSalle) chipped in with 15 points and eight boards.
A back-and-forth first half saw eight tie scores and nine lead changes with the Gators taking a 30-25 led at the half despite shooting just 39.4 percent (13-33). A strong rebounding presence turned into 16 second-chance points for Allegheny in the first half.
Wooster battled back in the second half to knot the score at 34-34 with 12:16 left to play, but Murtagh answered with two lay-ups and free throw followed by a jumper from Kankoski that led put Allegheny back up 42-37. The Gators never looked back from that point.
Michelle Hall led the Fighting Scots with 13 points.
Allegheny travels to Westminster on Saturday, December 6, for a 2:00 p.m. game.
