Gator Comeback Efforts Fall Short Against Washington & Jefferson

Washington & Jefferson used a strong rebounding effort to defeat Allegheny, 62-55, in women’s basketball action at the David V. Wise Center on Tuesday night. The Presidents (2-1) had a 47-35 advantage on the glass, including 17 offensive rebounds which led to 17 second-chance points.

Katie Gress (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) had 13 points and 11 rebounds for the visitors while sophomore Meredith McDonough (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) scored 16 point and pulled down eight boards for Allegheny (1-2). W&J point guard Shawndra McDonald (Houston, Texas/Westfield) led all scorers with 19 points.

Washington & Jefferson jumped out early on the Gators, taking a 10-point lead, 17-7, with 10:18 remaining in the first half. Allegheny closed the gap as the Gator bench scored 17 first half points and eventually gained the lead, 22-21, when senior Jessica Kankoski (Glenshaw, Pa./Fox Chapel) hit a three-pointer with 5:25 left. Allegheny stretched the lead to three, but the Presidents regained the lead at the half, 31-30.

The Presidents stretched the lead to 11with 13:31 left in the contest before the Gators mounted another comeback after W&J guard Leigh Sulkowski (Upper St. Clair, Pa./Upper St. Clair) was called for her fourth foul. Allegheny whittled the W&J lead down to two points as sophomore Kristen Lyzen (Brook Park, Ohio/Midpark) hit a free throw with 9:41 left to make it 46-44.

Amanda Stanonik (North Versailles, Pa./East Allegheny) answered for W&J hitting two consecutive jumpers and Gress hit another as W&J jumped ahead for good.

Kankoski finished with 10 points and four steals for the Gators. Sulkowski had 15 points and nine rebounds while Stanonik added 10 points and nine boards for the Presidents.
