Allegheny’s Season Likely Closed In NCAC Semifinals

November 7, 2003

David Damon likely brought the Allegheny College men’s soccer season to close with the lone goal in a 1-0 Wooster win over the Gators in the semifinals of the North Coast Athletic Conference playoffs. Allegheny, who falls to 11-5-2 with the loss, are not likely to get on of the four at-large bids that would give them life in the NCAA playoffs.

The Fighting Scots have eliminated both Gator soccer teams from the conference playoffs, with the women beating the 10th-ranked Allegheny squad in a shootout on Wednesday and the men registering the win on Friday afternoon. Allegheny won both regular season meetings.

The Gators had just as many shots as the host Scots, eight, but Damon was the only one to find the back of the net. Jung Kim set up the score with a crossing pass at the 75:41 mark of the contest.

Sophomore Brian Manougian (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth Senior) had four saves in the game for Allegheny and kept the Gator hopes alive by saving a penalty shot with just under 30 minutes left in the game. Wooster netminder David Trelevan also had four saves.

Allegheny had several opportunities in the contest, had two shots in the first half saved. A header by Alan Carr with 31:20 left in the second half sailed just wide right of the net.

The Scots (12-2-3), the top-seed in the tournament, will face Ohio Wesleyan in the championship game on Saturday, November 8, in a 1:00 p.m. game. The Battling Bishops defeated Denison, 4-0, in their semifinal game.
