Iron Unkind to Gators In Semifinal Tie With Wooster
November 5, 2003
Wooster goalie Becca Scina had six saves while the goal post and crossbar were responsible for four more as the Scots advanced to championship game of the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament with a penalty kick shootout win over Allegheny College on Wednesday afternoon. The game was tied, 0-0, at the end of 110 minutes of play, but Wooster earned the right to advance with a 3-1 decision in the shootout.
Allegheny (15-1-2) outshot the visiting Scots, 14-3, in the contest including an 11-1 advantage over the last 65 minutes. However, Scina was up to the task when the iron cage holding the net up wasn’t.
Junior Jill Gray (North East, Pa./North East) hit the inside of the right post in the first half only to have the ball bounce into Scina’s hands. Gray hit the cross bar in the second half, and then sophomore Stacy Miller (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) hit the crossbar with 11:08 left in regulation. That wasn’t the end of it, however. With 39 seconds left in the second overtime, senior Lauren Moser (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) launched a shot that skimmed off the top bar and over the net.
Wooster then scored on three of their first four shots in the shootout while the Gators managed to convert on just one of their first four. Scina had two saves in the shootout.
Wooster will advance to the tournament championship game where they will take on the winner of the Ohio Wesleyan-Denison game. Allegheny, who finished as the NCAC Champions, will wait to see if they receive an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament.
The Gators are riding a school-record 15-game unbeaten streak.
Note: According to NCAA rules, this game counts as a tie for both team’s records and shall be recorded as a 0-0 tie.
