Allegheny Claims NCAC Championship
November 1, 2003
The Allegheny College women’s soccer team claimed their first North Coast Athletic Conference championship since the 1989 season as they defeated Wooster, 1-0, at Gannon University on Saturday night to wrap-up a perfect season in the conference at 8-0. Allegheny now has six NCAC women’s soccer championships with titles in 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989 and 2003.
An evenly played game went scoreless well into the second half, with both teams just missing chances to take the lead. A header by junior Leah Karpa (West Mifflin, Pa./West Mifflin) was snatched by Wooster (13-5-1) netminder Becca Scina. Then a Wooster shot from 10 yards was blocked by a Gator defender.
It wasn’t until the 84th minute that Allegheny found the back of the net. Senior Sharon Greene (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) carried the ball through the midfield, drawing two defenders. Greene laid the ball into the goal box where Karpa ran onto it, took two touches, and buried it into the side netting to give the Gators a 1-0 lead with 6:04 remaining.
Wooster was unable to find the equalizer, and the Gators celebrated their championship on the field. The celebration will likely be short, as Allegheny will gear up to play the Scots again on Wednesday, November 5, at Robertson Field. Game time, which is subject to change, is currently scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
