Freshman placekicker Jason Montgomery hit a 31-yard field goal, just the second of his career, lifted Westminster College to a 3-0 overtime win against Allegheny College at Robertson Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Gators had a chance to tie it in their home opener in overtime, but Aaron Polack’s (Medina, Ohio/Medina) 25-yard field goal attempt was blocked by Tom Froelich who came bolting in off the left end.

The game was the first overtime contest at Robertson Field since November 13, 1999, when St. Francis defeated the Gators, 61-55.

On the winning possession in overtime, Scott Froelich, who rushed 32 times for 150 yards, ran three times getting the ball to the Gator 11-yard line. Quarterback Joe Getsy then ran two yards to the nine-yard line to make it third-and-seven. Getsy fumbled the third-down snap, the sixth Titan fumble of the game, but recovered giving Montgomery his opportunity to win it.

Playing in muddy field conditions, Westminster pounded the ball on the ground racking up 180 rushing yards. Allegheny managed 91 rushing yards led by junior Jamie Sye (Titusville, Pa./Titusville) who had a season-high 78 yards on 23 carries.

The Titans totaled 293 yards of offense as Getsy completed 10-of-15 passes for 113 yards in his first collegiate start. Brian Ekis hauled in four passes for 55 yards to lead Westminster.

Allegheny quarterback Bubba Smith (Doylestown, Ohio/Chippewa) went 11-25 with an interception for 110 yards as the Gators totaled 201 yards of offense.
