Late Goal Salvages Gator Tie Against Fredonia

September 10, 2003

Boxscore

Junior midfielder Marc Sciulli (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) drilled home a rebound with 2:28 left in regulation to lift the Allegheny College men’s soccer team to a 1-1 tie with Fredonia at Robertson Field on Wednesday afternoon and keep the Gators undefeated season alive. Allegheny is now 3-0-1 on the young season, having allowed just two goals in four contests.

Allegheny entered the game ranked fourth in the Mid East Region poll conducted by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Poll (NSCAA) while Fredonia was sixth in the NSCAA North East Region poll.

As time wound down in the second half, a frantic Gator offensive effort paid off in the waning minutes. A throw-in deep in the Fredonia (2-1-2) half of the field gave Allegheny a chance just outside the 18-yard box. The throw was volleyed toward net where it was blocked and came to Sciulli. The junior took little time in burying the opportunity to knot the game, 1-1, at the 87:32 mark.

Neither team would score in two ten-minute overtime sessions.

Allegheny outshot the visiting Blue Devils 12-7 in the first half, but found itself in a 1-0 deficit on Alex Parker’s first goal of the season. Parker took a cross on the back post from Victor Ianni and snuck it past Allegheny sophomore goalie Brian Manougian (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth Senior) into the side-netting with :29 left in the first half.

Manougian finished the game with one save as the Gators held a whopping 27-11 advantage in shots. Blue Devil goalie Matt Borchard had nine saves.

Allegheny is on the road for their next four games, beginning with Pitt-Greensburg on Saturday, September 13. Kick-off is slated for 1:00 p.m.
