Allegheny Shows Firepower In 3-0 Win Against W&J

Sep 7, 2003

Boxscore

It seems the Allegheny men’s soccer team is out to prove that the loss of last year’s top scorer hasn’t softened their offensive punch. The Gators cruised to a 3-0 win over Washington & Jefferson at Cameron Stadium on Saturday afternoon to improve their 2003 record to 3-0. Allegheny is making news in the region and nation as well as they sit fourth in the NSCAA's Sept. 1 regional rankings and just outside the top-25 in the national rankings.

Allegheny’s offense was in question this season after losing 17-goal scorer Adam Fletcher – who accounted for 37 percent of the team’s goals in 2002 – to graduation. But so far this season, the scoring-by-committee approach has worked as the Gators are averaging 2.33 goals per game. Five different players have notched goals this season led by freshman Daniel Carik (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) and senior Colin Redman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) with two each.

The Gators continued the offensive trend on Saturday with an aerial assault. Junior Ian Fisher (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) headed in a long throw-in from junior Josh Johnson (Murrsyville, Pa./Franklin Regional) 5:37 into the contest. Carik got into the act as well as his header beat Presidents’ goalie Brad Guinn with just 1:46 left in the first half. Redman provided the feed on Carik’s second goal of the season.

Redman wasn’t finished in the second half, however, as he scored his second of the season on a penalty kick at the 57:40 mark giving the Gators a comfortable 3-0 lead.

Allegheny outshot the Presidents, 13-5, and Gator sophomore goalie Brian Manougian (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth Senior) was called upon to make just two saves in 77 minutes.

Allegheny will play their first home game of the year on Wednesday, September 10, when they entertain Fredonia State in a 4:00 p.m. match at Robertson Field.
