Shorthanded Gators Take Out Host Mt. Union, 2-1
August 31, 2003
The Allegheny College men’s soccer team played the last 40 minutes of the game down one player, but still managed a 2-1 win over host Mount Union at the Purple Raider Tri-State Classic Soccer Invitational on Sunday afternoon. Gator sophomore goaltender Brian Manougian (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth Senior) stopped six shot to earn the win and lift Allegheny to 2-0 on the season.
Allegheny struck first at 42:15 of the first half when freshman Dan Carik (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) capitalized on a pass from senior Ian Fisher (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) to put the Gators up 1-0. Mount Union quickly responded as Paul Pendy knotted the score with just 35 seconds left in the half.
In the second, senior Derek Segesdy (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Shaker Heights) received his second yellow card of the game and Allegheny was forced to play a man down. Junior Ben Montgomery (McMurray, Pa./Peter’s Township) still managed to find the net, however, with his second goal of the season coming at the 74:30 mark. Junior Josh Johnson (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) was credited with the assist.
The Gators return to action on Saturday, September 6, when they travel to Washington & Jefferson for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
