Gators Fall to Otterbein Despite Strong Second Half

In a game with two distinct halves, Otterbein handed Allegheny a 1-0 loss in day two action of the Allegheny Classic women’s soccer tournament at Robertson Field on Sunday afternoon. The Gators' record drops to 1-1 with the loss.
Otterbein (1-0-1) owned the first half of this game, outshooting host Allegheny 8-3 in the stanza and taking an early lead. Adrienne Pozniak registered her first goal of the season as she redirected a cross from Kami Reynolds into the back of the net, beating a helpless Beth Van Parys (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) in net just 4:08 into the contest.
Allegheny bounced back in the second half, taking a 9-7 advantage in shots and getting six corner kicks, but the Gators never capitalized on several good scoring chances. Cardinal goalie Katie Chrien made three saves to earn her second shutout in as many games this season.
Allegheny hasn’t had trouble getting shots this season, averaging 17.5 per game, but they have managed to guide those shots to the net just 13 times in two games with two goals. The Gators hit their target just three times in 12 chances on Sunday while Otterbein found their target on nine of 15 shots.
Van Parys made three saves, and took the loss, in the first half while Joan Anderson (Holt, Mich./Holt) stopped five shots in the second half.
John Carroll and SUNY-Geneseo played to a 1-1 tie after double-overtime in the first game of the day. Mollie Bircher scored for John Carroll while Alaina Smith had the goal for Geneseo. John Carroll's Valerie Glassmer had 14 saves in the game.
The Gators return to action on Wednesday, September 3, as they take on Carnegie Mellon at 7:30 p.m. in their first road contest of the 2003 season.
