The Allegheny College women’s soccer team opened the 2003 season with a 2-0 win over John Carroll University on the first day of the Allegheny Classic at Robertson Field on Saturday afternoon. The Gators, who were picked to finish fourth in the North Coast Athletic Conference in a preseason coaches’ poll, outshot the Blue Streaks, 23-6, en route to a 1-0 record.
The Gators broke open the scoreless tie in the second half as Sharon Greene (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) scored the first goal of the 2003 season. Her shot 50:09 into the game beat Blue Streak goalie Valerie Glassner high, giving Allegheny a 1-0 advantage. Jill Gray (North East, Pa./North East) added to that cushion just over 18 minutes later when her shot from the left corner of the goalbox found the side netting on the right side.
Despite being outshot 10-4 in the first half, it was John Carroll who had the best scoring chance of the first period. Catharine Ramella broke into the Gators’ goalbox all alone, but her attempt from 10 yards out was parried away by goalie Beth Van Parys (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) just 12:51 into the contest. Van Parys made three saves in the first half before giving way to Joan Anderson (Holt, Mich./Holt) who was credited with the win. Anderson was credited with one stop.
The Allegheny Classic continues on Sunday, August 31, as John Carroll plays SUNY-Geneseo at 12:00 p.m. and the Gators take on Otterbein in a 2:30 p.m. match-up. Otterbein and Geneseo played to a 0-0 tie in the first game on Saturday.
