Second Half Drought Costs Gators Against OWU
Feb 22, 2003 A seven-minute scoreless drought in
the second half turned an Allegheny College six-point lead into a six-point
deficit as Ohio Wesleyan defeated the Gators, 60-55, in women's basketball
action at the David Wise Center on Saturday afternoon. Kelly Heil led
all scorers with 22 points on 8-19 shooting for Ohio Wesleyan. Freshman
guard Valery Medwid (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) was the lone Gator in
double digits with 10 points.
Allegheny (12-13, 10-6 North Coast Athletic Conference),
seeded fourth in the tournament, will host fifth-seed Earlham College
in the first-round of the NCAC Playoffs on Tuesday night at 5:30 p.m.
The Gators swept the regular season series with the Yeowomen, winning
by 16 at home.
On Saturday, Allegheny took a 28-23 halftime lead, shooting
43.3 percent. An even scoring line saw eight players score in the first
half with 18 points coming off the gator bench.
However, a seven-minute scoreless stretch in the second
half saw a six-point Allegheny lead reversed to a six-point deficit.
A jumper by sophomore Meredith McDonough (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic)
gave Allegheny a 34-28 lead with 16:21 left in regulation. By the time
sophomore guard Raelynn Miles (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) scored Allegheny's
next basket with 9:21 left, the Gators were trailing 40-36.
Ohio Wesleyan hung on to the lead and took the five-point
win, 60-55.
