Feb 11, 2003

The Allegheny College women's basketball team jumped out to a 15-3 lead just 5:06 into game and never trailed Oberlin College in a 64-52 win at the David Wise Center on Tuesday night. Freshman forward Courtney Steding (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) dominated the paint scoring 20 points on 9-of-15 shooting and adding nine rebounds, four blocks, five steals and two assists.

Steding scored 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting in the first half as the Gators jumped to a 38-26 lead at the break. Sophomore forward Meredith McDonough (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) finished with 12 points and eight rebounds.

Allegheny opened the game by scoring the first six points and had a 15-3 lead on Steding's lay-up with 14:54 left in the half. Oberlin cut the lead to eight points with 57 seconds left in the half, but the Gators scored four points in the last minute to take the 12-point margin. Allegheny shot 50.0 percent (17-34) in the first half and forced the Yeowomen into 21 turnovers, 14 coming on Gator steals.

However, Oberlin came out hot in the second half and cut the lead to five, 40-35, just four minutes into the second stanza. The Gators responded with a jumper from sophomore forward McDonough and three-pointers by Beth Van Parys (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) and Valery Medwid (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) to get the lead back to 13.

Oberlin cut the lead back to six once, but couldn't get any closer as the Gators held on for the 64-52 victory. Allegheny shot 42.2 percent in the game and held Oberlin to 34.5 percent while forcing the Yeowomen into 34 turnovers.

The Gators hit the road on Saturday, February 15, as they head to Denison for a conference match-up starting at 2:00 p.m.
