Allegheny Wins Fifth In A Row On Murtagh's Layup
Feb 7, 2003 Freshman guard Caitlyn Murtagh (Bethel
Park, Pa./Bethel Park) hit a lay-up with four seconds left and sophomore
guard Raelynn Miles (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) blocked a last second
shot attempt to lift the Allegheny College women's basketball team
to their fifth straight win, 57-55, over Earlham College (12-7, 7-5
NCAC) in conference action on Friday night. Murtagh led the team with
13 points on 4-of-9 shooting and added four assists and three rebounds
to lead the Gators (10-10, 8-3 NCAC).
Allegheny relinquished a two-point halftime lead and
trailed the majority of the second half. Murtagh hit a pair of free
throws to take back the advantage, 49-48, and the Gators held the
lead until Michelle Behler sank a lay-up with 27 seconds left in regulation
to tie the score. However, Murtagh answered for the Gators, rolling
in a lay-up with four seconds left. The Quakers managed to get the
ball down court, but Miles blocked Kim Patton's last second effort
giving Allegheny the 57-55 win.
Freshman forward Courtney Steding (McDonald, Pa.), the
reigning NCAC Player of the Week, had 10 points and was the only Gator
beside Murtagh to score in double digits. Allegheny shot 37.5 percent
and held host Earlham to 33.9 percent shooting in the game.
The Gators next game is scheduled for tomorrow, Saturday,
February 8, as they travel to Springfield, Ohio, to take on Wittenberg
in a conference match-up starting at 2:00 p.m.
